Jasmin

Jasmin is the story of a young girl who runs away to live alone in the Canadian
wilderness. She is part of a large family and it doesn't seem as if anyone cares that she is
very smart and wants to succeed in school. She is tired of being made fun of at school
because of the way her family behaves. The final straw is when her brother destroys her
Science project.

Jasmin proves to be very courageous as she learns to cope on her own and survive in the
wild. She is rescued by two artists, who do help her realize her hidden talents, When
Jasmin does return to her family, she finds out that her younger brother had also run away
to try to find her and she succeeds in finding him.

Through Jasmin's experience, the students are challenged to face their own fears and
decide whether they would be able to survive as she did. Junior high students really get
into this story because in one way or another, all of them see themselves in Jasmin, with
her hopes and fears of what the future might bring. It also lets them see that it is okay to
let their artistic talents show through.
