Silverwing is the story of Shade, a Silverwing bat. He is a very small bat and is teased about his size. This leads him to want to see the sun, which results in a whole series of adventures and misadventures, such as causing the owls to burn down the bat nursery. On his first migration South, he gets separated from his mother. he meets another bat Marina and battles vampire bats and rats as he finally finds his way back to his colony.
This novel is suitable for Grades 7 and up. It is filled with examples of figurative language and provides an excellent opportunity to discuss different kinds of prejudice.
