The Snow Goose by Paul Gallico

This is the story of Phillip Rhayader, who lives alone in a lighthouse on the coast of Essex. He shunned society after being rejected because of a deformity. He paints and tends to wild injured animals. A snow goose adopts him after it gets swept off course in a storm. The girl who found him, Frith, brought the goose to Philip and this was the beginning of a friendship. Phillip lost his life in rescuing trapped soldiers on the beaches of Dunbkirk, which is also part of the story.
